Playing in two bands at different stages of their career makes my head spin. Both bands, Anchoress and Bloom, I would say are interesting in their own regard. However, what’s fucked up is that Anchoress.. with all our reputation… gets shit on by people who have no idea what they’re talking about. Thanks to our “success” (which is a term I use with caution) people instantly peg us as sell outs, or a band that can no longer make their own decisions, that we’re not “punk”. Suddenly people assume we’re some party jock shit band that is in it for the money. Anchoress has (and always will for the foreseeable future) always done things our own way. Everything we’ve done up to this point has been our decision. Every tour has been on our dime, every piece of gear has been paid for by us, every recording we’ve done we’ve scraped the money and time for. Anchoress has been a band for almost 5 years. We’ve done two larger tours, have played close to 100 local shows probably. But the second we got label backing (and by label backing we mean 3 very lovely people who are allowing us to do things that were not within our own means) we’re suddenly “too big”. We get asked to play bigger bills now, uh oh! Anchoress isn’t cool anymore. Listen to our music. It isn’t radio rock, it isn’t indie, it isn’t even totally marketable. We’re four dudes who started playing music together and 5 years later this is where we are. We didnt’ set out to be big, or to be a hardcore band, or to have any of your bullshit cred. We write music because we WANT to. We play the bills we do because we WANT to. Everything we do is because we WANT to do it. Take a second to listen to our music. Pigeonhole us, put us in a genre. That’s fine. But don’t do that until you listen to our music. Don’t judge us on all the glitz’n’glam you think surrounds our band and judge us on the only thing that SHOULD matter, which is the music.Whenever a band is opening for some big rock act, or playing a basement, or got covered on Alternative Press… that’s all extravagant detail. That’s a side of music that is helpful to bands, but by no means should define it. STOP reading, stop blogging like a dumbass, and start listening to music.
On the other hand Bloom, a band who at this time has no recordings, no merch, and was started for the same reasons Anchoress did… Everyone has tons of praise for. I mean, I love Bloom, I love the music we write together, but we’re BARELY A BAND YET. Everyone assumes we’re better because it’s not Anchoress. Because it’s grittier? Because it’s darker? because we’re unknown? It’s funny to me that Bloom has great cred based on the fact that Anchoress’ “doesn’t”. I actually had one person tell me he’s way more excited about Bloom than Anchoress’s show next week and I’m like “Why? YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW BLOOM.” No one does. Just us, in Bloom. We got on the bill because the promoter is a friend of mine and he’s taking my word for it that we won’t totally suck dick. But you don’t know that! Maybe we’re fucking terrible. The funniest part about hat is that a lot of this dude’s favourite bands are bands that Anchoress shares infinite similarities with. But, ah… why would a band like that do well? Bands like that stay in your pocket, don’t they? Bands like that are elites that have their own circles that they navigate. They don’t need marketing, they don’t need labels. Right. Don’t judge my bands based on the other or your shitty standards of credibility.
Neither of my bands need your approval, your street cred, nor your scene. Everyone I’m involved with musically writes music because they love to do it and that’s it. There’s no glam, there’s no money, there’s no future. It’s just us, right now. This is what we do. Take it or leave it for what it is. But please be smart about the assumptions you make. If you’re one of those nerds that’s going to base a band over where they are in their career you can suck my dick. Go read about some celebrity drama. Get your poison out of scenes that were built on creating music for the sake doing it.
